What Color Motivates You?

How bizarre this quiz picked up on this!  I seem to be in a blue phase, a specific shade of blue I believe is called cyan.  Pale sky blue, light baby blue, you get the idea.  It’s totally weird for me because I’ve been a pink/yellow girl all my life.  So this recent fascination … obsession with blue almost feels like a kind of identity crisis, lol.

Challah Back Girl

I have no idea why a low-carb Gentile girl suddenly feels overwhelmingly compelled to make Challah bread for Shabbat, but there you go.

And I am beyond proud to say it turned out epic!  Whew!  Woo!

A Day in Court

Q: Did you see my client flee the scene?

A: No, sir, I didn’t. But subsequently I observed someone running several blocks away who matched the description of the offender.

Q: Who provided you with the description?

A: The officer who responded to the scene.

Q: A fellow officer of yours provided the description of this so-called offender. Do you trust this fellow officer?

A: Yes, sir, with my life.

Q: With your life? Let me then ask you this, officer. Do you have a room were you change your clothes in preparation for the day’s duties?

A: Yes, sir, we do.

Q: And do you have a locker in that room?

A: Yes, sir, I do.

Q: And do you have a lock on your locker?

A: Yes, sir.

Q: Why is it, officer, that if you trust your fellow officers with your life, that you find it necessary to lock your locker in a room you share with those some officers?

A: You see, sir, we share the building with the court complex. And sometimes lawyers have been known to walk through that room.

*****

Zing!  Oh you know that had to leave a mark!  This is why lawyers are instructed to never ask a question in court that they don’t already know the answer to, lol.

Have an epic weekend!

Pruning and Blooming

Found this in my drafts folder, that I wrote last Autumn but never posted for some reason.

As I was deadheading my flower pots the other day, I was mildly surprised at how much the spent blooms concealed.  Once I started clearing them out, there was a lot of junk underneath the leaves, lots of debris and fallen petals, just hiding there beneath the fading flowers.  I knew it needed to be done, and there were many almost-but-not-quite-spent blooms that had to be cut back, along with the dead stuff.  I knew it was good for the plants, that it would bring forth more blooms and fresh growth.

And I wondered if that’s how the Lord feels when He deals with us, sometimes.

Our hearts can look okay, especially if you don’t look too close.  But there can be a lot of … crap in there.  Crap we haven’t dealt with, or let Him take care of.  Things we like to keep hidden.  Shameful thoughts, painful thoughts, mean and sinful thoughts.  I wondered if He looks at me the way I look at my plants.  “I know it seems severe, and I know you think there’s still something good here, but trust Me, getting rid of this stuff will make you so much more happy and beautiful!  Your spirit will shine!”

I wanted to be picky with my garden deadheading.  Clip this dead flower here, cut that dying one there, dainty dainty nip and tuck.  It wasn’t long before I was wishing I just had a big hedge-trimming kind of tool to just zip the plants down to the tops of the pots and be done with it.

There’s a line from some cartoon my husband and I once saw long ago, where a character said, “He needed killin’.”  We laughed and it became part of our family joking around.  Dark, perhaps, but it’s kind of how we joke.  But it went through my head as I trimmed my flowers, especially as I cut blooms that weren’t totally dead yet but would be in a day or two.  “They needed killin’, they’ll bloom so much nicer now!”  It wouldn’t surprise me at all to hear Yeshua say to me, “Those thoughts, they need killin’!”

Yes, Lord, they do.  They’re not thoughts that are good for me, or anyone else, frankly.  Good thoughts, healthy thoughts, Christ-centered thoughts cannot bloom where angry, selfish thoughts live.  I suppose that’s kind of what Scripture means when it says:

John 15:2 (HCSB) Every branch in Me that does not produce fruit He removes, and He prunes every branch that produces fruit so that it will produce more fruit.

Colossians 1:10 (HCSB) so that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him, bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God.

John 12:24 (HCSB) “I assure you: Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains by itself. But if it dies, it produces a large crop.

John 15:16 (HCSB) You did not choose Me, but I chose you. I appointed you that you should go out and produce fruit and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in My name, He will give you.

I suppose pruning is never fun, neither for the prunee nor the pruner.  But, it needs doing, and once it’s done, the results can be so beautifully worth it.  And if the Lord loves me enough to prune, well isn’t that in and of itself, a kind of blessing?  Doesn’t it show that He believes there is something bloom-worthy in me and He wants to bring it out?

I’d like to believe that.

Whensday

My son was telling me about one of the people he met during an online gaming session.  He said this kid was a friend of another kid he knew, which caused me to ask, “So, is this new kid like the old kid?  Because as I recall, the old kid is kind of a jerk, and you’re known by the company you keep … “

And that made me remember when I first heard that line.

I was perhaps eighteen.  I ran into my old boss one day while walking around the town I lived in, and we chatted and caught up a bit.  He told me he was surprised to see me as he’d read an article in the local paper about how a local girl had run off with the carnival and he figured it was me.  I was stunned.  “Me?!  Run off with the carnival?  Are you kidding?  You must be kidding!”

“Well, you’re known by the company you keep, and you were keeping company with carnies, as I recall.”

“I was not!  I was keeping company with Mona, and Mona was keeping company with carnies!”

“As I was saying …”

I think it wasn’t until that moment that I finally understood the whole concept of that birds-of-a-feather thing.  I mean understood in my guts kind of way.  You can grasp concepts in your head, then eventually those concepts can settle the 18 inches down to your heart where you really feel them, but this one I felt in my gut, meaning I felt absolutely punched by it.

I knew how people thought about Mona.  She was a rebel, a wild child, an out of control girl.  There are other, worse, words that people used.  But she was my friend (for some reason, but that’s another post) and I always stuck up for her because that’s what friends do.  I also had some misplaced sense that she needed me to look after her, to make sure she didn’t get herself into even worse trouble.  I’m not saying I was an angel or anything, but I wasn’t on Mona’s level of wild either.

But people thought I was because I was her friend.

Up until that day I ran into my boss, I assumed that people knew I wasn’t like Mona.  She’d lived in that town her whole life and people knew her.  I’d only lived there a couple years.  My boss was a Deputy Sheriff on his day job, he only owned the store were I worked as a secondary income.  His kids had gone to school with her most of their lives.  And he told me that if she’d applied for a job at his store, he wouldn’t have hired her.  He almost didn’t hire me because I was her friend.

You’re known by the company you keep.

It had been some months between the time I left that job and the time I ran into my boss, and a lot had happened.  Namely, Mona and I had had a falling out, the kind that probably only seventeen year old girls can have.  She’d been living with me and my mother, step-father, and step-brother (sorry, can’t even try to say family anymore!) for a couple of years until our fallout and after that, I don’t know where she went.  I never renewed our friendship, although she and I did have one phone conversation a few years later.  I realized that whatever I thought there had been to our friendship, wasn’t.  We wouldn’t be friends if we met now, and we surely shouldn’t have been friends back then.  But, it’s hard to know that when you’re fourteen, the age I was when I met her.

The age my son is now.

I can only pass on the lessons I’ve learned, like my boss passed that one on to me.  It’s a good lesson!  I wish I’d learned it sooner!
